Slave narratives describe in an autobiographical fashion the life and working conditions of slaves and their everyday life (relationships with white as well as other slaves). They also describe punishments and many hardships that this peculiar form of property had to bear. The slave narratives under consideration were a valuable tool to induce Northern Christian whites in the United States to regard slavery as an evil institution. The student will examine the nonfictional slave narrative genre to reveal the rhetorical strategies employed by former slaves to persuade their readers of the importance of abolition.
