Práce se bude zabývat kontextem americké jižanské literatury a soustředí se na dílo spisovatelky Harper Lee, román To Kill a Mockingbird, kde vytyčí základní témata a motivy příznačné pro literaturu amerického Jihu druhé poloviny 20. století. Práce se následně bude věnovat povídkové tvorbě dalších jižanských autorů daného období (William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, Carson McCullers) a v rámci literárněvědné analýzy povídek těchto autorů se bude snažit definovat společná témata a postihnout poetiku literatury amerického Jihu v počátcích jeho literární tradice, zejména v rámci generace "in search of love" poloviny minulého století (téma morálky, rovnoprávnosti a rasové diskriminace v kontextu společenských vztahů maloměsta amerického Jihu). Součástí práce bude teoretická kapitola věnovaná poetice tzv. jižanské gotiky podle přístupů Charlese Crowa.
