Separating the Historical and Romantic Elements in Walter Scott's Novels Ivanhoe and Rob Roy
The student will read the two most famous novels by Scottish poet and novelist Sir Walter Scott and specifically examine the nature and these "historical romances," to wit, which sections of the novels are historical and which are "romantic" (imaginary, whole-cloth) in order to sell satisfactorily to his reading audience. The analysis of these aspects require a knowledge of the English and Scottish history of the periods in which these two novels are set, as well as some theoretical approach to historical romances generally.
