Předkládaná diplomová práce se zabývá zatím neprozkoumanou částí práce zvláštní osobnosti amerického žurnalismu, Huntera S. Thompsona. Jako primární zdroj jsou použity čtyři sbírky jeho článků nazvané Gonzo Papers. Záměrem práce je podat obraz Spojených Států tak, jak je Thompson zachytil v jeho článcích od konce 50. let až do začátku 90. let, a poukázat na spojitost mezi americkou kulturou a politikou v druhé polovině 20. století.

This thesis studies collected works of a special persona of the American journalism, Hunter S. Thompson. The four volumes of Gonzo Papers gathering his articles are the main source for this study. The objective of the paper is to construct the picture of the United States as Thompson portrayed them in his articles from the late 1950s to the early 1990s and point out the relation between the American culture and politics in the second half of the 20th century.

Práce se zaměří na dílo jednoho z nejvýznamnějších představitelů hnutí Nového žurnalismu ve Spojených státech, Huntera S. Thompsona (1937-2005), a jeho specifický pohled na zásadní problémy americké společnosti v dané době.
Práce začne s obecným úvodem do americké kultury, politiky a literární scény v době od 60. let 20. století až do jeho konce, pak se posune k Hunterově reflexi klíčových záležitostí, kterou lze najít v jeho četných esejích, dopisech a časopisových článcích. Práce bude postupovat chronologicky, tedy od nejranějších prací po konečnou fázi jeho žurnalistické kariéry.
Vzhledem k časovým a praktickým důvodům bude práce založena hlavně na Thompsonových spisech sebraných v edici nazvané Gonzo Papers.
Autor věří, že práce může poskytnout důležitý vhled do kontextu některých záležitostí soudobých amerických dějin a kultury.
