Course content |
Content of lectures: Distribution of the chemical compounds between the compartments of the ecosystem, fugacity, fugacity capacity, chemical reaction in the compartments of the ecosystem, persistent compounds, sampling of the air, water and soil. Pollutants in the atmosphere, sulphur and nitrogen oxides, ozone, carbon oxides, greenhouse effect, trace organic pollutants in the atmosphere, their concentration and determination. Water ecosystem and its pollution, methods of isolation and concentration of volatile, semivolatile and polar compounds from water. Chromatographic techniques and their use for the determination of the various groups of the pollutants. GC-MS and LC-MS techniques. Contamination of the soil, extraction with the solvents and with the supercritical fluids. Determination of metals in the water and soil. Determination of anions, ion chromatography, capillary electrophoresis. Processing of the analytical results, recovery, R.S.D., limit of detection and quantification, validation of the analytical methods, reference materials, QA/QC, GLP. Content of practices: 1) Determination of iron in oxidic ores by Zimmerman - Reinhardt method. 2) Determination of iron in oxidic ores by the atomic absorption spectrometry with flame atomization (FA-AAS). 3) Determination of sulphates by gravimetric and conductometric methods. 4) Determination of nitrites by the Bendschneider and Robinson method. 5) Determination of nitrates in water by direct potentiometry using nitrate ion selective electrode (ISE)

Learning outcomes |
Introduction into a theoretical basis of the distribution of the chemical compounds between the compartments of the ecosystem. The overview of the isolation and concentration of the pollutants in the atmosphere, water and soil, their determination with the modern instrumental techniques with the emphasis on the chromatography and its connection with the spectroscopic techniques.
The student will gain knowledge about the occurrence of chemical substances (especially the main inorganic and organic pollutants) in environmental compartments, understands their movement through various parts of the environment. He/she masters the principles of air, water and soil sampling, pre-concentration of monitored substances and basic methods of their determination. |
Prerequisites |
The course builds on the basic knowledge of general chemistry and students should master the application of the basics of physical, organic and analytical chemistry in monitoring chemical substances in environmental compartments and monitoring their movement.
