Course content
Part I Introduction to the habitat conservation practice 1) Introductory lesson ? terminology and definition of habitat level, ancestor sources of Natura 2000 habitats CORINE/Palaearctic habitats, EUNIS, vegetation mapping, Habitats directive, Annex I. 2) Implementation of Habitats Directive into the national law, habitat mapping, establishing the Natura 2000 network Part II Habitats classification, their distribution and natural complexes 3) Habitats of open waters and wetlands 4) Mire habitats 5) Habitats of alpine belt 6) Habitats of cliffs and boulder screes 7) Dry grasslands and xeric shrubs 8) Meadows and pastures and mesic shrubs 9) Forest habitats 1. (deciduous alder, hornbeam and oak forests) 10) Forest habitats 2. (beech forests, coniferous spruce and pine forests) 11) Habitat complex in landscape, distribution

Learning outcomes
The general aims are (i) introduction to the habitat level (vegetation and its environment), (ii) survey of central European habitats and their protection by Natura 2000 (Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC), and their evaluation, monitoring and practical management. Practical field excursion will be focus to habitat mapping and evaluation.
