Global and local element cycling. Primary production in freshwater ecosystems. Phosphorus: forms, reactions, occurrence, sources, interactions water-sediment, eutrophication and its modelling, water quality management. Nitrogen: forms, reactions, transport from forest and agricultural soils. Sulphur: forms, occurrence, sources, atmospheric transport, acidification, cycling in hydrosphere. Silicon, iron, manganese, aluminium and other trace elements: forms, occurrence, sources, cycling in waters, significance for biological processes in the aquatic environment. Organic matter: transport from soil, production in water, composition, classification, characterisation, geochemical a biochemical processes with participation of organic matter.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing)
  • Class attendance - 24 hours per semester
  • Preparation for exam - 24 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
To give an overview of basic processes in cycling of nutrients (C, N, P, S), organic matter (primary production, humic substances), and other elements (Si, Fe, Mn, Al) within the ecosystem of "catchment-reservoir/lake" and show possibilities how to evaluate these processes.
Insight into influence of catchment and its characteristics (natural conditions, anthropogenic factors) on composition of surface waters, on aquatic ecosystems of reservoirs and lakes and water quality.
Prerequisites
No presuppositions are required.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

Students have to demonstrate their knowledge of learning in an oral exam.
