Biological diversity: species, genetic, community and ecosystem diversity, measuring biological diversity, distribution of biological diversity. 3. Extinctions: patterns of extinction, rates of extinction, causes of extinction, vulnerability to extinction. 4. Conservation genetics 5. Conserving species by conserving populations: problems of small populations, loss of genetic variability, effective population size, metapopulations. 6. Conservation biology in space and time, SLOSS, island biogeography 7. Plant conservation in situ and ex situ, action plans, reintroductions, management. 8. Conservation of natural habitats and landscape 9. Conservation of small animals in situ and ex situ, action plans, reintroductions, management. 10. Conservation of large animals in situ and ex situ, action plans, reintroductions, management. 11. Restoration ecology, urban ecology, protection of aquatic habitats 12. Conservation biology and global warming. Learning activities and teaching methods |
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Work with text (with textbook, with book), Written action (comprehensive tests, clauses), Individual preparation for exam, Excursion
|
Learning outcomes |
To familiarise the students with basic principles of up-to-date biological approaches applied in nature protection.
Students will learn understanding current problems in conservation biology and potential solutions. |
Prerequisites |
Student is familiar with basic ecology.
|
Assessment methods and criteria |
Test, Seminar work
Course is running every academic year. Participation on the excursions is obligatory. In the middle of the term, the knowledge is verified by a test, and his results are combined with a final test. Student has to elaborate semestral work, which will be reviewed and defended. |
