Content of lectures: 1. Fundamentals of biogeography: basic concepts, environmental conditions, basic of biogeographical zonation 2. Theory of island biogeography focused on protist organisms 3. The theory of biogeography protists organisms - the theory of moderate endemism ubiquity theory; concept of flagship species 4. General mechanisms of spreading of the protistian organisms, geographic barriers 5. Speciation (on case studies on cyanobacteria and algae); concept of morphologically similar organisms - morphospecies, cryptic species 6. Endemism - general characteristics; biodiversity hotspots for microorganisms; role of microhabitats 7. Biogeography of microscopic algae and cyanobacteria (blue-green algae, chrysophytes, diatoms, green coccal algae, desmids, dinoflagellates, Haptophytes etc.). 8. Biogeography macroscopic algae 9. Biogeography amoeba-like protists (amoebas, arcellinida, slime molds...) and ciliates 10. Biogeography of marine heterotrophic protists (Foraminifera, Radiolaria...) 11. Methods for studying biogeography og protist organisms, case studies. 12. The problem of biological invasions protists; the possibilities of practical protection of the diversity of protist organisms

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of course it to present current knowledge about biogeography of protist organisms and provide answers to traditional questions of biogeography "Which species? And where?" In combination with other questions such as "Why are they there? or "Why are not there?". General issues of biogeography, including the topic island biogeography, will be explained using a number of case studies. As an integral part of biogeography will briefly mentioned the problem of biological invasions of protist species and possibilities of using of protist organisms in practical nature conservation and biodiversity.
Deepening the knowledge of protistology by a biogeographic view.
