Course content
Content of lectures: - History of utilization - Current utilization in agriculture - Current utilization in industry (food, pharmacy, etc.) - Mass production methods, physiological aspects - Biomass processing methods - Organisms in mass production - Algae and Cyanobacteria as testing organisms - New ways in utilization and limits of current technologies - Environmental aspects of mass production - Algae and Cyanobacteria with negative economic importance Content of the seminar: - Each student presents the content of the assigned article, which is thematically related to the content of the course and critically assess the article within the acquired knowledge. - Each student will research products containing cyanobacteria, algae and substances derived from cyanobacteria, algae and cyanobacteria in the general stores.

Learning outcomes
To acquaint students with: - History of utilization of cyanobacteria and algae by men - Current utilization of cyanobacteria and algae in agriculture, food production, and other industrial fields - Methods of large scale biomass production - Methods of biomass processing - Novel ways of algal biomass utilization
Student will get an overview on current commertial utilization of algae and Cyanobacteria, biomass production and processing, and environmental aspects of biomass production.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge on Cyanobacteria and algae at least at level given in Plant Biology (KBO/767) class or higher is expected.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Systematic student observation

Completion of a tasks assigned within the course, correct answers on at least 60 % of examination questions.
