Lectures: Features of laboratory methods and interpretation of their results - Basic principles of human metabolism - Cellular aspects of metabolic regulation - Coordination of metabolism in the whole body - Digestion and absorption of nutrients - Metabolic specialization of organs and tissues - Communication systems - Integration of metabolism of nutrients under physiological conditions - Metabolic response to extreme physiological stress - Metabolic response to some pathological conditions - Lipoprotein metabolism, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases - Energy balance and weight control - Diabetes mellitus Seminar: Presentation of a project on the given topic.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing)
  • Class attendance - 30 hours per semester
  • Preparation for classes - 40 hours per semester
  • Preparation for exam - 50 hours per semester
  • Field trip - 16 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
To introduce students to the regulation of human metabolism and metabolic disorders in the context of pathobiochemical and pathophysiological changes assessed in clinical biochemistry. In particular, attention will be paid to diseases affecting a large proportion of the population (cardiovascular diseases, obesity, diabetes, cancer).
The student will gain a deeper insight into the metabolic regulation, pathophysiology and pathobiochemistry of the most common population diseases and therefore the ability to correctly interpret test results in clinical biochemistry.
Prerequisites
Completion of Clinical Biochemistry KME/743 is an advantage.

Assessment methods and criteria
Combined exam, Analysis of the qualification work

Credit: preparation of a project on the assigned topic and its 5-10 minute presentation in front of other students. Examination: multichoice test with a minimum of 50% + oral exam (students draw a question from a list given to them during the semester).
