Course content
History and role of aquaristis. Overview of main groups kept in the Czech Republic and worldwide. Aquarium fishes as the main objective of aquaristics. The requirements regarding their environment. Fish-keeping rules and reproduction. Senses and their adaptations to the aquatic environment. Fish behaviour - instincts, reflexes, habituation, learning. Changes in ecology and behaviour during fish ontogeny. Reproductive biology of fishes. Parental care in fishes. behaviour of fishes in the field and in aquarium. Aquarium as an ecosystem, biotic and abiotic factors. Technical equipment, basic premises of aquarium keeping and rearing of fishes. Water as the ambient. Water plants and their role. Natural and artificial foods. Unwelcome organisms in aquariums, diseases, prevention and cure. Economics of aquaristics. Tutorial: The practicals follow the lectures and include familiarization with the main groups, determination, anatomy, and also the construction and functioning of aquariums, and a visit to a museum/zoo/aquarium.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to present theoretical and practical basics of aquaristics. Aquaristics is presented as a complex endeavour ranging from hobby to scientific research. The goal of the course is to give information on husbandry, reproductions, ethology, feeding and care for the aquarium fishes in various aquarium systems and settings.

Assessment methods and criteria

Attendance in practicals. Students will be examined oraly with a test in midterm. 70 % of correct answers are needed to pass the examination.
