Content of lectures: 1. Geography of western Eurasia; marine, freshwater and terrestrial biomes of western Palaearctic. 2. Geological and biogeographical history of western Palaearctic I. (up to Pleistocene) 3. Geological and biogeographical history of western Palaearctic II (Holocene) 4. Regional biodiversity I (marine) 5. Regional biodiversity II (invertebrates) 6. Regional biodiversity III (insects) 7. Regional biodiversity IV (fishes and related groups) 8. Regional biodiversity V (amphibians, reptiles) 9. Regional biodiversity VI (birds) 10. Regional biodiversity VII (mammals) 11. Distribution of endemic and relic species 12. Recent changes in invertebrate and vertebrate fauna (extinctions, invasions, exotic species) 13. Conservation programs in western Palaearctic and Europe

Learning outcomes
|
The course provides information about the fauna of Europe and western Palaearctic and its conservation.
Orientation in animal distribution and animal conservation issues at EU and West Palearctic scale; skills for scholarly work in European scale, knowledge transfer in EU structures.

Prerequisites
|
Basic orientation in biological and ecological disciplines, including basic geography.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Essay, Colloquium, Seminar work
Grasp of the information from lectures, orientation in course literature, ability to absorb novel informatin, scholarly essay and its presentation to colleagues, active participation in discussions.
