Course content
Content of practicals: Introduction to the main concepts and research relating to Intercultural Communication. Students will be acquainted with the key ideas and thinkers in this relatively new field and encouraged to discuss and form their own opinions on key concepts. Use of Case Study texts and videos to put the ideas into context. Students will discuss and analyse Intercultural Case Studies in order to understand the roots of miscommunication. Use of literature and film to encourage students to reflect on their own culture and their perceptions of other cultures in an analytical way Reflection and Problem Solving -Introduction of a range of "critical incidents" where cultural misunderstandings prevent successful communication. Students will discuss the roots of the problem, referring back to the concepts studied in the theoretical part of the course. They will then work together in deciding how best to respond. -Reflection on students´ own experience of intercultural differences, what was learned, what could have been done differently Language Level Work -Addressing topics such as how to express politeness in English, what level of formality and directness is appropriate to different situations and which words and phrases should be employed to create a good impression. Soft Skills and Practical Skills -Training in writing professional emails, giving presentations, conducting negotiations and team work skills in an intercultural context. This will involve gaining an awareness of both the structures and rules of communication in English and how they may vary from culture to culture. All materials are available on-line in MOODLE LMS.

Learning outcomes
Develop awareness of the role that culture plays in communication with people from different countries and increase ability to interact in English with other cultures Improve confidence in spoken and written English on the level of language Improve practical and soft skills such as negotiating, giving presentations, working in teams, writing emails etc. in practical scenarios and settings
Improve students' communication skills in English. Preparation for study or work abroad or for study at USB in the case of foreign students. Deepen understanding of the role that culture plays in communication between people from different countries and of different nationalities. Development of spoken and written forms of language. Improvement of practical "soft skills", i.e. the communication skills needed to work in an international team. Improve students' ability to use English for all these purposes.

B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference and higher

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance assessment, Student portfolio analysis, Interim evaluation

Based on attendance and participation. Students will be required to maintain a reflective portfolio over the course of the semester which they will submit to gain the course credit.
