Course content
Content of lectures: The lectures include the following topics: Electromagnetic radiation, interaction of electomagnetic radiation with molecules, solar radiation Excited molecules, reactions of excited molecules Quantification of photochemical processes Direct photochemical reactions in natural waters Photochemically generated oxidative species Photosensitized processes, natural water sensitizers Photochemical transformation of xenobiotic compounds.

Learning outcomes
The course is designed to provide students with an overview of photophysics and photochemistry fundamental principles, to give them information about the photochemical reactions occuring in natural waters and to show the possibilities of photochemical transformation of natural as well as xenobiotic compounds.
Student understands fundamental photochemical laws. Student is able to characterize individual photochemical processes. Student learn the experimental approaches in practical photochemical experiments. Student master the application of general theoretical principles on natural water systems.
Prerequisites
For enrolment basic knowledge of physical chemistry is needed. Compulsory prerequisite is one of the courses UCH 031, UCH 104, UCH 121.

Assessment methods and criteria
Combined exam

To pass the course a student has to succeed in examination which means to obtain min. 60 % of points in an examination test
