Course content
Content of practices: 1) Extraction of leaf dyes 2) Synthesis of acetylsalicylic acid 3) Synthesis of dibenzalacetone 4) Extraction of essential oils by steam distillation 5) Isolation of caffeine from coffee/tea 6) Direct determination of the total fat 7) Measurement of spectra of selected compounds by infrared spectroscopy

Learning activities and teaching methods
Laboratory
  • Preparation for classes - 5 hours per semester
  • Class attendance - 30 hours per semester
  • Preparation for credit - 5 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
Practice the knowledge acquired in Organic chemistry.
Students will learn about laboratory safety, basic laboratory equipment and experimental procedures used in organic chemistry.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures and techniques (destillation, extraction, recrystallization etc.).

Assessment methods and criteria
Development of laboratory protocols

To pass the course student must perform all laboratory exercises and hand in all laboratory protocols worked out in sufficient quality.
