Course content
Content of lectures: 1. Introduction (history, development, use of materials, perspectives, techno-economic and environmental aspects, the importance of the subject) 2. Physical and Chemical Properties 3. Crystal lattice and its disorders, Miller indices, stress and deformation, and fracture development violation 4. Mechanical properties and testing (special emphasis - fracture mechanics, fatigue, creep and relaxation) 5. recovery and recrystallization 6. Phase and phase transformation, binary and ternary equilibrium diagrams 7. equilibrium diagram iron - uhlíkSlitiny iron with carbon and other elements influence. 8. Fundamentals of Metallurgy (conventional metallurgical processes, special metallurgical processes). 9. Phase transformations in ferrous alloys (austenitizing, pearlite, bainite, martensite transformation, TTT diagrams). 10. Heat treatment of ferrous alloys (annealing, hardening, surface hardening). 11. Chemical and heat treatment (carburizing, nitriding, karbonitridování, carbonitriding) and thermo-mechanical processing. 12. Division steels and their labeling. Structural Steel. Tool steels. Iron. 13. Non-ferrous metals and alloys and their processing. 14. powder metallurgy and its applications, technical ceramics. Content of practicals: 1) Introduction, laboratory safety, entering individual projects 2) Tensile test of steel 3) Hardness tests 4) Impact test 5) Testing of cast iron 6) Presentation of individual tasks, test 7) Assessment

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the theory of metallic material with a special focus on structural materials and a basic summary of the behavior of these materials under different conditions including possible phase transformations. Another aim is to introduce metal phase transformation and possible thermal treatment of metals.
At the end of this course, students will acquire basic knowledge of materials, especially the metal one, for construction. Student will get knowledge of basic properties of metals, their behavior and phase transformations. In this relation heat treatment of metals will be introduced.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of concepts of physics and possibly chemistry.

Assessment methods and criteria
Combined exam

Understanding of the topic within the frame given by the plan. Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes: credit: attendance of seminars, min 75%, passing the test to min 75%. exam: passing the test min 75%, proof of knowledge at the oral exam min 75%. Additional information: Oral presentation of individual work with a thematic focus on the testing of materials is one of the conditions for obtaining graded credit.
