Course content
Lectures: 1. Introduction to the Geoinformatics - basic terms and principles, 2. Abstraction and modelling in GIS - topology, time, geographcial localisation, coordinate systems, cartographic projections, 3. Vector data, vector data model, elementary spatial operations - database queries, measuring, buffering, 4. Raster data, raster data model, hybrid data models, 5. Database systems, geodatabase - proposal and creation, data inputs for GIS, data outputs, data quality and error sources, 6. Data for GIS - GPS, remote sensing, LIDAR etc., 7. Spatial operations with vector data - overlays, etc., 8. Spatial operations with raster data - map algebra, 9. Thematic mapping in GIS, 10. Web GIS technologies - WMS, WMF servers etc., 11. GIS Project - phases of the project, 12. National geoinformation infrastructure, Open GIS, data sources. Seminars: Thematically correspond to lectures - exercises in ArcGIS 10 and Quantum GIS.

Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to assimilate basic skills of work with spatial data, specifics of spatial data, backgrounds of geoinformatics, simple spatial analyses in the GIS environment.
Student knows and understands specifics of spatial data, masters basic operation with this kind of data. Student maters also routine activities in GIS, simple types of spatial analyses, basic principles of data visualisation. Student is also informed with newest information in the geoinformatics and GIS, data sources and actual information.
Prerequisites
Basic indicators of descriptive statistics, basic mathematic and computer skills.

Assessment methods and criteria
Combined exam, Test, Seminar work

Credit requirements: succesful semestral project or exercises solution in an e-learning system. Exam requirements: Written exam test at minimum 60% of points. Oral exam.
