Course content
Topics: 1. People and relationships; present simple / continuous 2. Describing people; adjectives, negative prefixes; stative verbs 3. Transport; past simple / continuous 4. Public transport; would / used to / be used to 5. Free time; present perfect simple / continuous 6. Free time activities; idioms; phrasal verbs; articles 7. Occupations; past perfect simple / continuous 8. Jobs; noun suffixes; comparatives and superlatives 9. Media and communication; passive voice; phrasal verbs; countable / uncountable nouns 10. Weather; future 11. Food and drink; reported speech 12. Food and cooking; phrasal verbs; indirect questions; prepositions 13. Travel and tourism; infinitive and -ing forms; prefer / would rather / had better

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing)

Learning outcomes
The subject English Language 1, together with the subject English Language 2, deepens systematically the knowledge necessary for successful completion of Placement Test at the CEFR B1 level. Students will learn about different types of exercises focused on non-productive language skills, especially grammar, "Use of English", reading and listening, which are typical for internationally recognized exams. Teaching of the language focuses on acquiring the basic skills necessary for doing test exercises at the B1 level according to the Common European Framework for Languages.
Student is provided information about the requirements for each level of CEFR and mainly about the B1 exam. Student is able to complete each type of exercises.

Knowledge of general English at language level of A2+.

Assessment methods and criteria
Test

Credit Requirements: - attendance at the fisrt consultation (absence must be excused appropriately) - enrolment in the Moodle system in the course of English Language 1 (AJ1/KAJ1) - completion of other task in Moodle by the end of week 12 in the winter and summer semesters with the average score at least 85 %; students may do the tasks repeatedly - to complete successfully the course, it is necessary to score at least 70 % in the final credit test. It tests the use of English, listening and reading comprehension; time allocation is 45 minutes including listening; every student has two attempts to succeed in the test - self-study
