Course content
Lectures: 1. Basic concepts of sociology, how to think sociologically 2. Birth of sociology and modern society. August Comte. Émile Durkheim. Ferdinand Tönnies. 3. Society and economics. Karl Marx, Karl Polanyi, Max Weber. 4. Norms, values and attitudes. 5. Socialization and social groups. Institutions and organizations. 6. Structure of the society. Social stratification. Stratification points of views. Status. 7. Changes of family and gender. Gender, labour market and roles. 8. Globalization. Democracy and economic systems. Modernization and conservativism. 9. Mass media, mass culture and consumption society. Lifestyles. 10. Regional differences in social systems I. Quality of life in Czech regions. Economic aspects. 11. Regional differences in social systems II. BValues and attitudes. Cultural context of regional differences. 12. Environmental sociology. Human-environment relationship. Social aspects of climate change. 13. Rural sociology. Changes of Czech countryside and rural culture. 14. Methods of sociological research. Sampling and hypotheses.

Learning activities and teaching methods

Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to present major topics of sociology, its relation to other social sciences, and important phases of the sociological studies. The course particularly focuses on the insight into the birth and development of modern society, with reflections of changes of Czech society. Beyond the traditional sociological concepts, terms and authors, students will be familiarize with theories and case studies of environmental and rural sociology.
Students are aware of the basic sociological concepts, they are able to orientate in the history of sociology and they are able to apply their sociological understanding to the everyday reality, including sociological interpretation of current social problems.
Prerequisites
High school knowledge of social sciences is a prerequisite for the course of Sociology.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Test, Seminar work

Credit requirements: Students will read and discuss study texts (3-6 short home readings per semester). Test evaluating knowledge gained in the course. Exam requirements: Oral examination including discussion about self-selected studied literature.
