Course content
Lecture Topics: 1. Introduction to the history of political thought. 2. Society and State. 3. Democracy. 4. Political parties and party systems, interest groups. 5.The functions of elections in modern democracy, electoral systems. 6. Development of the party system of the Czech Republic. 7. Presidential and parliamentary model of division of power. 8. Division of power in the Czech Republic. 9. Parliament and the legislative process. 10. Human rights. 11. Political ideologies: liberalism and conservatism. 12. Political ideologies: socialism, environmentalism, new social movements. 13. International relations and institutions, foreign policy of the Czech Republic. 14. European integration process. Exercises: 1. Man and political power, legitimacy and legality; 2. Morality and pragmatism in politics; 3. Conservatism and liberalism; 4. Socialism as an ideology; 5. Fascism and Communism; 6. Theory of democracy; 7. Comparison of electoral systems; 8. Political parties and party systems; 9. Political spectrum in the Czech Republic; 10. Division and control of power; 11. Human and civil rights in international documents; 12. UN, NATO, EU; 13. Foreign Policy of the Czech Republic; 14. Final test.

Learning outcomes
Students will learn about the functioning of the political process and its links to economic and social development. They will acquire basic information about the development and structure of political science, will learn about its key concepts, methods and theories of exploration. After completing the course, the graduate will be able to orient himself / herself in political systems, and will understand the key aspects of the development of democracy and civil society, especially the mechanism of representation of interests in contemporary conditions. He / she will be better able to assert himself as a citizen and an economic expert.
Students will understand the basic principles of the political system, representation of interests, mediation between citizens and political power, participation of citizens, the legitimacy of power, electoral system, etc.

Oral examination, Seminar work

Credit Requirements: Seminary work. Examination Requirements: Knowledge of the substance within the scope of this syllabus. Written and oral exam.
