Course content
|
The course is divided into three areas: A) The importance of sociology and the specifics of rural sociology, contemporary post-modern changes and rural topics B) Basic sociological terminology and how to use it C) Empirical research, practical questioning, interpretation pitfalls, statistics, the art of interpretation Lectures: 1. Introduction to the sociological way of thinking, basic approaches and theories 2. Why rural sociology? Traditional and contemporary functions of rural areas - agriculture as a key? 3. Basic sociological concepts I. 4. Rural versus urban - a problem with the definition of rural area. Basic sociological concepts II. 5. Culture, rural culture, its rise and fall 6. Contemporary changes in the landscape and rural society 7. The project of modernity and the "Rural Project" EU and rurality support 8. Environment and Natural Resources in sociology - the case of environmental sociology 9. What precedes the data collection in sociological research, research problem, hypotheses, operationalization 10. The art of questioning, quantitative and qualitative approach 11. Statistics in sociology - the basic usage 12. Basic techniques of data collection (observation, interviwing, experts) 13. The art of interpretation Exercises: Seminars are devoted to practical management of research, formulation of questions, the sociological way of reading answers and interpretation. Seminars are mainly devoted to topics 1, 3, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13.

Learning outcomes
|
The objective of the rural sociology course is to introduce students to the basics of sociological thinking, basic terms, structure and functions of the welfare system, to show the basic sociological techniques of data collection, processing and interpretation. Rural area, landscape and environment as a subject of sociological research.
The student knows the basics of sociological thinking, terminology, structure and functions of the welfare system, the basic techniques of collecting, processing and interpretation of data.

General knowledge. General (secondary school level) knowledge of social sciences.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Combined exam
Credit requirements: Design your topic and hypotheses and on the basis of processing a questionnaire of 10 questions according to the assignment in Moodle. Two absences on seminars are allowed without any confirmation. Credits will be awarded not earlier than 14 days before the end of the semester in accordance with the measure of Dean No. 124/2017 Article 15. Examination Requirements: Written and oral exam. The examinations will be written 3 weeks before the beginning of the examination period in accordance with the measure of Dean No. 124/2017 Article 15.
