Course content
Lectures: 1. Financial system, its structure and function. 2. Typology of financial markets. Financial assets. 3. Basic determinants of the investment strategy - yield, risk and liquidity. 4. Financial intermediation and its importance in the economy. 5. Money, its definition, creation, circulation. Monetary aggregates. 6. Theory of interest rates. Functions of interest rates in the financial system. The Fisher hypothesis. 7. Financial market and its structure. International financial market. Relation to the balance of payment of a state. Financial institutions. 8. Bank system. The central bank and monetary system. 9. Commercial banking. Insurance institutions. 10. Institutions of collective investment and other financial institutions. 11. Trades on the secondary markets. Pension system. 12. International financial system, its architecture and development. Financial market crisis. 13. The World Bank Group. The International Monetary Fund. 14. European monetary system. European Monetary integration. The Maastricht criteria. The European Central Bank. The European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide students with a review of the role and functions of the financial system and financial institutions in the national economy and the worldwide background. The course creates an appropriate base for understanding specialised Financial Markets, Security Finance, Banking, Insurance, International and Public Finance techniques.
Understanding the basic principles of the financial system, students will acquire a basic overview of financial markets, banking, international finance, securities.
