Course content
1. The Age of Progress. On the Way to modernity. 2. The Age of Steam, Coal, Steel and Railway. Industrialization and Transformation of the Society. 3. The Age of Secularization or the so-called second Confessionalization? Religion and Society in the Nineteenth-Century Europe. 4. The Age of Discovery, Knowledge and Technology. Science as a new Religion. 5. The Age of Isms. From (Neo)Classicism to Modern Art. 6. The Age of Congresses. International Relations from Vienna Congress to Paris Peace Conference. 7. The Age of Revolutions. Revolutions of the Modern period. 8. The Age of Nationalism. The Unification of Germany and Italy. 9. The Age of Imperialism. Destiny of the white man and the New Colonialism. 10. The Age of new Players. The USA, Japan and China are entering the world stage.

Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming)
Learning outcomes
To familiarise students with the main events and key aspects of the transformation of European society in the era of the so-called long 19th century.
The students understand the historical changes and processes that have shaped the modern world and extend beyond the present.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of history of the modern period.

Assessment methods and criteria
Colloquium

Active participation in the lectures (min. 60 %), reading literature, interpretation of the selected questions in the context.
