Learning outcomes
For the 18th Century there are different approaches to organize the history of German Literature during that time: enlightenment vs irrationalism, idealism, classics, Goethezeit etc. But beside such problems of terminology its the golden century of cultural nation-building with the basement of literature, between 1770 and 1832. This time created authors who are wellknown till today, such as Lessing, Goethe, Schiller, Eichendorff or Hoffmann. The goal of the subject is to find out how those tendencies contributed towards the German Culture at the switch to the 19th century and also to reflect on its influence nowadays. Students will achieve a survey of a decisive phase of German Literature, the awakening of a cultural "self-estimation", of the often quoted "Geist", but in the context of intercultural characters and textes.
Students will be able to understand the main tendencies in German Literature of a most relevant period not only for literature, but also for German "Geist", which influenced the following centuries, some of them till today. So they will learn to reflect on historical terms like "Das lange 19. Jahrhundert" or "Klassik" as well as in some crucial cultural terms like "Innerlichkeit" etc.
