Course content
|
1.Lexicogologically part: Lexem, lexicology and its components, lexicography. 2.Basics of semiotics and semantics, etymology, phraseology. 3.Vocabulary, its structure and construction. 4.Specialized vocabulary (economics, administration, etc.). 5. Homonymy and polysemy, synonymy and antonymy 6.Hyperonymie and hyponymie, 7.Metaphor, metonymy. 8.Transformation of the word. 9.Types of dictionaries and their characteristics. 10.Word-forming portion: Morphemes and their classification: base morphemes, word-forming of morphemes 11.A word like formation product. 12.Constructing words: composition and its typology, explicit derivation of affixes, contamination, implicit differentiation 13. Conversion and its typology, shortening. 14.Productivity trends.

Learning outcomes
|
In the frame of Lexicology the students will be acquainted with the structure and origin of vocabulary, morphological organization of vocabulary and its lexical structure. They will understand the historical context in German vocabulary and other languages (interferences and transfer from Latin, French, English), semantic analogies and patterns of lexicalization process. Within the word formation students will acquire the ability to form words in accordance with the principles of word formation as a sign of a higher degree of mastery of a foreign language and they learn to derive meaning less familiar words based on the application of knowledge of word formation.
Students will gain an overview of the existing German vocabulary and the emerging vocabulary and will be able for the acquired information to derive meaning less familiar word terms.

Prerequisites

The course assumes a basic overview and a good knowledge of the German language (B1/B2).
