Course content
1. Introduction and practical matters Lecture: The Canon of Older English Literature 2. Medieval imagination and aesthetics I: Legends of the saints and chivalric romances 3. Medieval imagination and aesthetics II: Allegories and medieval drama 4. The waning of the Middle Ages (T. Malory) 5. English Humanism and English Reformation 6. The rise of English Renaissance Drama 7. The work of William Shakespeare I - histories 8. The work of William Shakespeare II - comedies 9. The work of William Shakespeare III - tragedies 10. The work of William Shakspeare IV - romances 11. Petrarchism and English Renaissance Poetry 12. The concept of the Baroque and Metaphysical Poetry 13. Conclusion and evaluation

Learning outcomes
The main objective of the course is reflecting on the canon of older English literature. It focuses on the key aesthetic, literary and philosophical values of the given period. The course progresses chronologically and covers the period from the High Middle Ages to the age of the Baroque. The course is a lecture with a discussion on the given problem fields and literary works. Requirements include regular attendance, reading assignments and oral presentation. Credits are given on the basis of a written essay (2000 words).

Prerequisites
No prerequisites are required, only the completion of a comprehensive course on English literature.

Requirements include regular attendance, reading assignments and an oral presentations. Credits will be given for an analytical essay (min. 2000 words).
