Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basic features of segmental phonetics. Students learn abouth the system of English sounds and the principles of phonemic and phonetic transcription. The lecture covers theoretical issues and the practicals are meant to practice the issues covered in the lecture.
The student identifies and pronounces individual sounds in the English language. The student explains the specific features of the pronunciation of English sounds depending on their position within a word. The student describes the relationship between the written form of English and its pronunciation, and vice versa. The student explains irregularities in the pronunciation of borrowed or otherwise irregular words in English. The student describes the internal structure of a syllable and determines syllable boundaries within a word. The student applies theoretical knowledge in their own production of sounds. The student correctly transcribes the pronunciation of words using phonemic and phonetic transcription. The student can determine the correct pronunciation from the written form with a high degree of probability, and vice versa. The student correctly pronounces borrowed words and other pronunciation-irregular words.
