- Introduction to the course, accents of English, correspondence between phonemes and graphemes, transcription - Articulators, vowels and consonants, cardinal vowels, types of consonants - English vowels, short vowels, long vowels, diphtongs, triphtongs, practicing pronunciation - Voicing, fortis and lenis, phonetics vs phonology, phonetic transcription, English plosives - Fricatives and affricates, nasals and other consonants - Pronouncing spelling, silent letters, silent syllables, homographs - Spelling the sounds, homophones - Pronunciation of foreign/irregular words, French origin, Lating origin, English place names - The syllable - Strong and weak syllables

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basic features of segmental phonetics. Students learn abouth the system of English sounds and the principles of phonemic and phonetic transcription. The lecture covers theoretical issues and the practicals are meant to practice the issues covered in the lecture.
Students will master basic knowledge of segmental phonetics as well as practise correct pronunciation and phonetic transcription.
