The purpose of the course is to provide the students with a comprehensive survey of English Literature (for the purposes of this course, "English Literature" consists of literature written in the territory of Great Britain, Ireland and the Commonwealth). The course follows the development of English literature from Romanticism, focuses on the rise of the novel in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, modernism to the unusual boom of the English novel in the late twentieth century. The lecture is accompanied by seminars in which students will read the key works of English literature and will learn to interpret them on an independent basis. Besides the history of English literature the course strives to provide students with a wider picture of the cultural and political history of Great Britain and, last but not least, to give them an information basis for their future decisions on their specialisations and the choice of a B.A. thesis.
