Course content
1. Basic literature on the field: main syntheses and basic studies in the Czech Republic and Europe. 2. Archaeological periodicals in the Czech Republic and Europe. 3. Basic terminology: prehistory, prehistory, protohistory, medieval, archaeology, etc. 4. Division of archaeology: according to chronological focus, methods used, type of monuments studied, etc. 5. Intermediate archaeological disciplines and related disciplines. 6. The concept of archaeological culture and their subdivision. 7. Archaeological sources and their subdivision. Field monuments. 8. Archaeological mobile sources. Raw materials used in prehistoric and medieval times. 9. Basics of archaeological methodology. Field survey and research, museological processing. 10. Methods of relative and absolute chronology in archaeology. 11. Periodization of prehistoric and medieval times. 12. Overview of the history of archaeology in Europe and the Czech lands. 13. Overview of the history of archaeology in South Bohemia. 14. Current organisation of archaeology in the Czech Republic.

Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide students with the basics of archaeological theory and methodology. The lectures will provide an overview of the basic literature, archaeological sources and their classification, archaeological methodology and the history of the field. In the seminars, they will learn about the process of writing a professional text, the method of citation, etc., which they will test with a practical example of writing a short professional text.
The student will gain basic information about archaeology, its classification, methods and history of the field.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of history within the scope of the secondary school curriculum.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination, Student performance assessment

Written examination, active participation in discussions during the course; continuous updating of knowledge about the literature and topics discussed, preparation and presentation of a seminar paper, 80% attendance.
