Course content
1. Epic literature in the Middle Ages (hagiographic narratives, chansons de geste, chronicles). 2. The novel in the Middle Ages (courtly romance, *Roman de Renart*, *Roman de la Rose*). 3. Medieval poetry (courtly lyric poetry, satirical poetry, fabliaux, ballads). 4. Renaissance prose (Navarre, Rabelais). 5. Renaissance poetry and theatre, the Pléiade (Ronsard, Du Bellay, Garnier). 6. French Classicism; the authority of rules in literary creation (fables, maxims, character sketches, fairy tales). 7. Man between the infinite in grandeur and the infinite in smallness (Descartes and Pascal). 8. The anti-conformist movement (Scarron, Cyrano de Bergerac, Saint-Amant, etc.). 9. Classical theatre (Corneille, Racine, Moli?re). 10. The philosophical tale and novel in the Age of Enlightenment. 11. The rise of the novel in the 18th century (from the picaresque novel to memoirs). 12. Theatre in the 18th century (from moral comedy to bourgeois drama). 13. Final debate.

Learning outcomes
The course will show students the development of French literature from the beginnings the period of enlightenment (incl.).

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

Regular attendance at a seminar, maximum 3 absences. Continuous homework and reading according to the program. Seminar work on the given topic (min. 10 standard pages). Presentation of the reading list (minimum 20 titles), oral exam.
