Course content
1. Introduction: definition of the course topics, introduction to the literature 2. Religious literature: St. Francis of Assisi and Jacopone da Todi 3. The Sicilian and Tuscan schools, the major figures and their works 4. Stilnovism and poesia comico-realistica, the major representatives and their works 5. Dante Alighieri: La Divina Commedia 6. Francesco Petrarca: Il Canzoniere 7. Giovanni Boccaccio: Il Decamerone 8. Niccolo Machiavelli: Il Principe 9. Ludovico Ariosto: Orlando Furioso 10.Torquato Tasso: La Gerusalemme Liberata 11. Baroque Poetics and Giambattista Marino 12. Carlo Goldoni, his work and importance 13. Giuseppe Parini, his work and importance

Learning outcomes
The main aim of the course is to reflect in a chronological perspective the development of the canon of Italian literature from its beginnings to the end of the 18th century. The course is conceived as a lecture series devoted to the most important authors and their canonical texts. It includes a regular seminar focused on discussion and work with specific literary texts in the Italian original, or even in Czech translation. The course of Italian literature at the master's level focuses mainly on the introduction and analysis of the literary, aesthetic and philosophical values of selected works as representatives of the specific historical epochs.
Students will gain a basic knowledge of Italian literature from its origins to the 17th century.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

Oral exam. Regular attendance, active participation, preparation of individual outputs on selected authors and their works. Attendance at seminars is compulsory (three absences will be accepted).
