Course content
|
1. Differences between Czech and Spanish: genetic and typological distinctions between the two languages. Interference as a systemic phenomenon in contrastive analysis. 2. Passive sentences, passive-reflexive sentences, impersonality. Functional and stylistic differences between Czech and Spanish. Translation equivalents and their distribution in various text types. 3. Sentence types according to the speaker's attitude (identification of problematic areas). 4. Operators (prepositions, conjunctions). Differences in Czech and Spanish usage. 5. Modal-temporal relations. The system of tenses and moods in Spanish and their relationship to the Czech system. 6.-7. Aspect, Aktionsart. Contrastive analysis of aspectual categories (escribió / escribía vs. psal / napsal / dopsal). The relationship between grammatical means and lexical meaning. 8-9. Determination in Spanish. The system of determination in Spanish and its absence or different realization in Czech. 10. The nominal system (nouns). The categories of gender, number, and countability and their contrastive characteristics. 11. The nominal system (adjectives). The role of adjectives in both languages, the expression of relational adjectives and possessive adjectives. 12.-13. Corpus analysis and annotation of linguistic phenomena. Analysis of authentic data and presentation of case studies.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the field of contrastive linguistic analysis of Czech and Spanish at the levels of grammar, syntax, and text structure. The course develops students' ability to work with authentic language materials and corpora and prepares them to apply a contrastive approach in teaching, translation, and linguistic research.
- The student will describe the fundamental differences between the Czech and Spanish linguistic systems, including key areas of contrast at the lexical, morphosyntactic, and textual levels. - The student will characterize selected contrastive phenomena (e.g., determination, mod-temporal relations, aspect, impersonality, the nominal system) and their functioning in both language systems. - Based on the knowledge acquired, the student will explain the causes of contrastive differences and their manifestations in authentic texts. - The student will apply their knowledge of contrastive analysis in the interpretation of linguistic phenomena and in working with texts in the fields of translation, teaching, and linguistic research.

Prerequisites
|
This course requires a minimum C1 level of proficiency in Spanish. Prior completion of the courses Spanish Morphosyntax I-III and Lexicology and Semantics of the Spanish Language is recommended. A basic knowledge of Czech or another Slavic language is also recommended.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Student performance assessment, Seminar work, Interim evaluation
Regular attendance (a maximum of 3 absences is permitted). Ongoing completion of assigned tasks in Moodle, which are assessed on an ongoing basis. To successfully complete the course, students must achieve at least 70% of the total score in Moodle. Submission of a seminar paper and presentation of the results at the end of the course.
