Course content
1. Syntax as a scientific discipline: history and development of the approaches to syntax. 2. Syntactic elements and relations: from parts of speech to syntagmata. 3. The structuralist approach to syntax: Generative grammar. 4. The interaction of syntax and semantics: types of predicates; actants and adjuncts. 5. The verb as the nucleus of a sentence: tense and aspect. 6. The verb as the nucleus of a sentence: mood and modality. 7. Spanish sentence structure: word order and its variations. 8. Functional elements: determination. 9. Functional elements in suprasentential syntax: pragmatic markers.

Learning outcomes
The course builds on the course 0SS1 and is an extension of the already acquired theoretical and practical knowledge. It shows syntactic phenomena from a more general perspective, presents various theoretical approaches to syntax. Knowledge is applied to the material of Spanish, but also Czech in a contrastive perspective.
Students will understand the different levels of relations within and among complex sentences and be able to identify them in authentic language material.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Written examination, Self-reflection, Interim evaluation

1. Regular attendance (3 absences allowed). 2. Active participation and continuous task completion (reading, exercises). 3. Combined exam - syntactic analysis of a text and oral interview. Exams will be done in the examination period according to the USB Faculty of Arts timetable.
