Course content
1. Typology of texts and their functions 2. Cohesion, coherence. Mechanisms of cohesion: grammatical, lexical, 3. Coherence and non-coherence relations in the text. 4.-5. Intra-textual referencing: types of anaphoric and cataphoric relations. 6. Ellipsis. Types of ellipsis, text-forming function, ellipsis in Spanish vs. English. 7.-9. Deixe: means of deixe. Personal, spatial, temporal and textual deixis. Contrastive differences. 10. Connectors and organizers of text. Connectors as means of text and discourse organization. Classification, functions, contrastive comparison of chi/sj. 11. Thematic sequence. Thematic sequences in narration and description. 12-13. Principles of computer annotation of textual relations.

Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Work with text (with textbook, with book), Work with multi-media resources (texts, internet, IT technologies)
Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to present to the students a linguistic theory of text. Text will be treated both from the structural and from the pragmatic point of view (relation text - discourse). During the classes is taken into account the contrastive point of view.
The student will be able to analyze and confront with Spanish texts of different types.

No special prerequisites.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Analysis of creative work (musical, visual, literary)

Regular attendance (3 absences allowed). Active participation in class. Preparation of seminar paper (annotation of coreferential relations in the text). The grade of the paper will be added to the exam result. Oral examination to verify knowledge of the material covered.
