1. Prehistory of the French language. 2. Vulgar Latin. 3. Main evolutionary periods of the French language. 4. Old French - sociolinguistic and historical introduction. 5. Old French - main phonetic features. 6. Old French - morphology, syntax and lexicon. 7. Middle French - sociolinguistic and historical context. 8. Middle French - the period of main structural changes. 9. Renaissance and classical French - creation of the norm. 10. Modern French.

Learning outcomes |
The aim of the course is to present to the students the evolution of the French language from the Vulgar Latin till the modern period. Each evolutionary period is characterized both form the sociolinguistic and linguistic (diachronic) point of view.
At the end of the course the learner is expected to be able to understand the principals of the diachronic analysis of the French language and of its history. |
