Course content

Historical lexicon: 1. The position of the Italian language among the other Romance languages. 2. Phonetic and phonological development. - Vocal system (voicing and voiceless vowels, diphthongs, conditional phenomena). - Consonant system (single and double consonants, consonant groups) 3. Morphosyntactic development. - Morphology of the main word types already present in Latin (nouns and adjectives, verbs, pronouns, adverbs, prepositions). - Analysis of new Romance and Italian categories (articles, verb tenses). 4. Development of syntactic structure between Latin and Italian. History of the language 1. The beginning of the awareness of the existence of the Italian language. The linguistic theory of Dante Alighieri 2. "Questione della lingua" in the 15th and 16th centuries. Pietro Bembo and the stabilisation of the standard. The Baroque and the Accademia della Crusca 3. The Enlightenment Revolution. National revival in the 19th century. The Manzoni/Ascoli controversy 4. The relationship between language and dialect after the unification of Italy. Unifying factors in Italian after the Second World War 5. Concomitant tendencies (regional, vernacular, standard, neo-standard Italian)

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to present to the students the evolution of the Italian language from the Vulgar Latin till the modern period. The main stages in the history of Italian language will be presented in the second part of the course.
The students will acquire a basic overview of the history of Italian, basic principles of the diachronic approach to the evolution of the language, including an introduction to the current online resources for the study of the early stages of the language (diachronic corpora, electronic dictionaries of Old Italian).

Basic knowledge of Latin.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral examination, Written examination
Regular participation and active work in the course (min. 80%), passing a written test on historical vocabulary and an oral exam on the history of the Italian language.
