Course content
1. Development and language change, internal and external causes. 2. Periodization of the history of Spanish. 3. Diachronic Phonemics. Vocalism, diptongation, yod. 4. Consonantic changes. Palatalization, sonorization, fricativization. 5. Nouns: reduction of case morphology, substantive classes and genders. 6. Adjectives: genders, gradation, position. 7. Pronouns: personal, three-gradual deixis, formation of article. 8. Verb. syntetic and analytic forms, decay of mediopassive. 9. Diachronic syntax: typological change, word order, reduction of non-clausal subordination. Analysis of texts, lexicon. 10. Dialectal variation: Spain and America.

Learning outcomes
The course aims on introduction to development of Spanish language in relation to other Romance languages and dialects, periodization of the development. Introduction to basic phonetic, morphological and syntactic changes, non-Latin elements in the language. Historical and current dialects. Spanish in America. Stress on contrastive and comparative characterization of the phenomena in Romance languages.
Students will be introduced to the baseic historical dvelopment of Spanish language and to its diversity.
