Course content
1. Semantics and lexicology. definition, history, different conceptions and aproaches. 2. Meaning. Ogden-Richards´ triangle. Signification, designation, reference, sense. Context. 3. Semantic and lexical structures and units. Problematics of word, morphemes. 4. Paradigmatic relations between significants (polysemy and homonymy) and between significates (synonymy and antonymy). Hierarchy of meanings (hyponymy and hyperonymy). 5. Syntagmatic relations of meaning. Collocations, composition of meanings. Idioms. 6. Changes in meaning and its causes. 7. Lexicon. Basic lexical fund. Stratification of the lexicon. Centre and periphery. Origin of the French vocabulary. 8. Vocabulary enrichment. Lexicogenesis, neologisms, borrowed words, calques. 9. Lexicography. 10. E-Dictionaries and corpora.

Learning outcomes
The main objective of the course is to provide students with the theoretical basis of semantics (its relation to other linguistic disciplines, language as a system of sings, meaning, relation of syntax and semantics) and of lexicology (structure of word, principles of word formation, etc.). Attention will be paid also to word formation and the problematics of meaning from the practical point of view.
At the end of the course the learner is expected to acquire complex knowledge of semantics and lexicology, he should understand the structure of the French vocabulary and the problematics of word and meaning.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of French language at least at the B1 common reference level.

Oral examination
