Course content
1. History of the French language 1 2. History of the French language 2 3. Reflections on "civilisation"; overview of the changes that emerged in the 19th century and during the Belle Époque 4. Secularism (la?cité) 5. The First World War 6. The interwar period 7. The Second World War 8. Decolonisation (with a reminder about colonisation) 9. The advent of the Fifth Republic and how it works; the presidents of the Fifth Republic 10. The Thirty Glorious Years 11. The economy today: the three sectors, energy, ecology 12. Social protection and the struggles to improve workers' conditions 13. Education (structure, school year, timetables, school zoning, priority education areas, examples of the baccalauréat, grandes écoles / universities, Parcoursup, CNED)

Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to provide students with an outline of historical, cultural and ideological development of France, its geography and economy. Lectures will be combined with seminars based on working with authentic materials.
- The student describes the main stages of French history. - The student characterises the major cultural and intellectual currents of French society. - The student describes the main geographical, institutional, and economic aspects of France. - The student explains selected key notions of French civilisation in their historical and social context. - The student uses their knowledge of French realities in an informed way to interpret different aspects of French culture and society.
