Course content
1. Modernism. Assimilation and changes of European and North- American inspirations of thoughts and arts. Aesthetics of "the end of the century", decadence. Conception of modernity, formulation of Americanism. 2. Premiers modernists (Martí, Silva). Renaissance of lyric poetry (Darío). 3. New prosaic forms -chronicles , "art " novel, fantastic short story (Quiroga, Lugones), essay (Rodó). 4. Decline of Modernism, women-poetesses (Mistral, Agustini, Ibarbourou). 5. Avant-garde in Spain. New tendencies, movements, reviews. Ultraism. 6. Generation 1927 (García Lorca, Alberti, J. Guillén, Aleixandre, G. Diego). 7. Lyrization of narrative prose (Pérez de Ayala), "greguerías" by Gómeze de la Serna. Poetic drama (Casona). 8. Latin-American prose of the first third of 20th century. Ruralism, creolism (M. Rojas). Novel of Mexican Revolution (Azuela). 9. Regionalism, novel of "the land " (Rivera, Gallegos, Güiraldes). 10. Indigenist novel, mundonovismo. Essay(Reyes). 11. Latin-American Avant-garde. Literary reviews: Martín Fierro (Buenos Aires), Avance (Havana), Contemporáneos (Mexiko).Region of the Andes : "impure" poetry (P. Neruda), kreacionism (Huidobro). 12. Mestizo´s mysticism (Vallejo); La Plata region : experiment and return to the national tradition (Borges). 13. Carribean region: negrism (N. Guillén, Cabrera). 14. Mexican region: poetry of death (Villaurrutia, Gorostiza) and everydayness (Pellicer).

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to combine lectures with seminars and practical reading of literary texts. It will be focused on the Spanish written literatures of the first third of 20th century.
Knowledge of the Spanish written literatures of the particular period.

No special prerequisites.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination

Compulsory attendance at a seminar (maximum 3 absences allowed), active participation, individual home preparation, required reading. The student shall present a list of required reading books during the exam. The final exam terms will be listed in the relevant exam period according to the schedule of the Faculty of Arts of the JU.
