1. Basic terminology and bibliography. A brief overview of the history of the discipline. 2. Main literary sources of Christian iconography: Old and New Testaments, Legend of aurea, theological and mystical literature of the Middle Ages. 3. Origin of Christian iconography. Christian typology. 4. Iconography of Christ. 5. Iconography of the Virgin Mary. 6. Iconography of the Holy Trinity. 7.-12. An overview of New Testament iconography from the Annunciation to the Descent of the Holy Spirit. 13. Iconography of the Apocalypse, The Last Judgment and The Dance of Death. 14. Liturgical clothing, tableware and liturgical books.

The course introduces students to the problems of Christian iconography of biblical and iconography of saints. The lecture will introduce the development of Christian iconography from the time of early Christianity until the 18th century and basic pictorial themes inspired by the New Testament texts (Gospels, Acts of the Apostles and Revelation of St. John). It will acquaint students with iconographic motifs rooted in medieval theological literature and hagiographic texts (Legend of aurea). In the seminar, students will learn to work with iconographic manuals and present a paper on a given topic. During the semester they will elaborate a seminar paper in which they will give an iconographic description of the decoration of the selected sacral building. The course is completed with a knowledge test.
