Course content
1. Heroic themes in Anglo-Saxon and medieval literature and their influence on contemporary fantasy 2. Shakespeare and Renaissance literature 3. The Age of Reason and the development of English novel (Defoe, Swift, Fielding, Richardson, Austen, English Gothic novel) 4. Romanticism as a response to Rationalism and an inspiration for Existentialism (Blake, the Lake School, Byron, Shelley, Keats) 5. Victorian literature (Ch. Dickens, sisters Brontë, E. Browning, G. Eliot, L. Carroll, A.C. Doyle, T. Hardy) 6. O. Wilde and G.B. Shaw 7. English literature at the beginning of the 20th century, modernism

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Work with text (with textbook, with book)

Learning outcomes
The course will concentrate on particular works of English literature from its Anglo-Saxon roots to the beginning of the 20th century. Theoretical lectures are followed by practical seminars providing students with authentic texts, which can be used for a deeper knowledge of the subject as well us for a teaching practice.
