Learning outcomes
The course is focused on the evolution of the British epistolary novel from the beginning of the 18th century to the present day. A view across centuries and genres gives students an opportunity to revisit a variety of literary trends and genres, from the Enlightenment satire and sentimental literature, via Gothic novel to the postmodern employment of the epistolary form. The selected novels are studied with respect to their cultural-historical contexts and in relation to relevant literary trends. Reading and interpretation of texts are accompanied with a lecture that explains the theoretical historical literary background. The seminar aims at maximum student involvement in discussion and text interpretation.
