Course content
1. Contemporary situation in society, culture and art; 2-3. Group of the Máj almanach (1858), poetry and prose; 4. two shapes of 'parnasisms ' in the Czech literature; the 'Lumír' and 'Ruch' model of culture and literature; 5.-7. Svatopluk Čech, Jaroslav Vrchlický, Julius Zeyer, Josef Václav Sládek. New contacts with Slavic and Western literatures; 8. variations in realistic prose; 9. historical prose; 10. rural novels ; 11. realistic drama; 12. neoromanticism and art nouveau at the end of the century; 13. the rise of literary criticism; 14. variations of realisms (naturalism, impresionism).

Learning outcomes
The lecture will be dealing with the variations of Czech literature during the second half of the 19th century - from the end of National revival to the 1890's. It will focus on key works and main tendencies of Czech literature in this period.
Broad survey of literature and main tendencies of this period and special literature. Ability of interpretation of crucial literary works.
Prerequisites
The course presupposes basic knowledge of Czech Language and Literature.

Written examination

Active partipation in the lecture.
