Course content
|
The notion of interpretation and analysis - objective and subjective approaches to a literary text. Delimiting a text: definition, on overview of concepts, the relation of a text to its "surroundings". An overview of interpretative methods employed between the second half of the 19th century and the second half of the 20th century. Structuralism: approaching a text (defining the basic problems) Deconstruction: an attempt at "anti-interpretation". Manuscriptology: the theory of writing as "unfolding the meaning". New historicism and an attempt at a cultural interpretation of a text. Advantages and disadvantages of the intertextual interpretation of a text (the conflict of emanent and societal approaches)

Learning outcomes
|
This course provides a theoretical basis and terminology for the methodology of literary interpretation, specially promoting practical application of the latest approaches. The seminar is focused on the interpretation of a particular literary text, namely prose and poetry of the 19th and 20th centuries. Attention is paid to contrasting the 'scholarly' (scientific) approaches to a literary text with the emotional (sensuous) ones, and also to possibilities of combining both modes.
The ability to interpret a text, using various practical approaches, identifying its inner structure, describing its mechanisms and defining its relation to the surrounding cultural context.

Prerequisite: completion of the Introduction to the study of literature exam.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Essay
Active participation in the course, completion of the final test and a paper no shorter than ten pages (an attempt at interpretation of a chosen literary text, prose or poetry)
