Course content
Introduction to world literature for youngsters. Children's literature in Classicism (17th century) and Enlightenment (18th century). Classical and literary fairytale in the world literature. Founding fathers of modern fairytale in the 19th century. The typological changes of modern fairy tale. Literary fairytale in the 20th century. Realistic fiction about children's life in the 19th century. Stories about children's life in the 20th century. Adventure story, its types and founding fathers in the 19th century. Adventure story in the 20th century. Founding fathers and creators of science-fiction and fantasy literature in the 19th and 20th centuries. Nature and animal stories for youngsters in the 19th and 20th centuries. Selected chapters from contemporary world literature for youngsters (including Slovak literature) in the 21st century. Grasp of recommended reading in world literature for youngsters.

Learning outcomes
The series of lectures traces the development of children's literature in the world, taking into consideration changes in typical genres and the choice of representative works and authors. The main focus is on the reflection of the following stages and sub-genres: Classicism and Enlightenment; folktales and literary fairy-tales; realistic fiction about children's life; adventure story; nature and animal stories; 19th- and 20th-century fantasy literature; analysis and interpretation of selected 21st-century authors and works.
Besides having an overview on classical and contemporary world children's literarure, the graduate will be skilled in the interpretation of literary works and genres with regard to the juvenile aspect.
Prerequisites
Basic the orientation on classical and contemporary world children's literarure.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination, Analysis of creative work (musical, visual, literary), Interview

Completion of a seminar paper, no shorter than ten pages, including the interpretation (reviews) of three works (of different genres) chosen from the world literature for children and youth.
