Course content
Introduction to literature for youngsters. The theory and practice of children's readership. The beginnings of Czech children's literature. Folk fairy tales and their literary adaptation in the 19th century. Czech children's literature in various periods: the second half of the 19th century; the early 20th century till the end of World War I; between the wars; in the 1920s and1930s; during the Nazi occupation and World War II; after the war (1945-1947); between 1948 and 1955) and in the late 1950s; the flowering of children's literature in the 1960s; children's literature in the time of "normalisation" (the seventies and eighties); since the early 1990s; children's literature after 1989 - part 2. Children's magazines. Contemporary theoretical and critical reflection of children's literature.

Learning outcomes
The lectures outline the development of Czech children's literature from the beginning to present times, placing emphasis on changing types and genres; on representative autors and works, with respect to social and cultural context. Among the children's genres, special attention is given to folk tradition; classical and modern fairy tale; children's stories; and poetry. Students will also be introduced to the current trends in the theory and criticism of Czech literature for youngsters.The programme of the seminars includes interpretation of selected texts representing milestones in the development of children's literature and major genres.
The graduate has basic orientation in Czech children's literature, both in its historical development and in contemporary works, besides mastering the skills of literary interpretation.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Student performance assessment

Completion of a seminar paper, no shorter than ten pages, based on the interpretation (reviews) of three selected children's books.An oral examination on the student's reading aperception of fifty books chosen from the recommended reading list of Czech and world literature for children and youth.
