Course content

Lectures: 1. The importance of plant cultivation. Factors influencing plant growth and development. 2. -3. Vegetables - importance, separation, cultivation, rotation of crops. 4. -5. Ornamental plants. Annual flowers, biennials and perennials. Make up flowers. Indoor plants - vegetative propagation. Hydroponic cultivation. 6. -7. Fruits plants, cultivation and vegetative propagation. 8. Medicinal plants. Toxic plants. 9. Field crops. 10. Plant nutrition, fertilization - distribution of fertilizers, principles of compost establishment. 11. Plant protection. Pests in the garden. Plant diseases in the garden. 12. Alternative methods of plant cultivation, principles of organic farming. Natural gardens. 13.-14. Horticulture in school practice - school gardens and their equipment, importance for garden pedagogy. Practical training in growing and propagating selected useful and ornamental plants. Practical knowledge of individual types of vegetables, fruits, ornamental, houseplants and useful plants. Plant protection against pests, fertilization and plant nutrition. Practical training in working in the school teaching garden and didactic use of the school garden.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to gain knowledge about the cultivation of common vegetables, fruits, ornamental plants and traditional crops, to get acquainted with the basic horticultural procedures, principles of plant protection and treatment, basic methods of plant propagation. The course also provides information on the didactic aspects of Plant Cultivation at primary school.
The student will gain practical skills and habits in growing and propagating plants. The course is the basis for the practical implementation of teaching in the school gardens.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Test, Seminar work, Interim evaluation
Knowledge of growing houseplants, ornamental and medicinal plants, vegetables and fruit trees. The exam also includes the issue of teaching in school gardens.
