This course deals with the history, present and didacticisation of literature for children and young people in German-speaking countries. After a brief historical outline, the work in the seminars focuses chronologically on the Grimm Brothers' fairy tales, fairy tales, faux fairy tales (W. Hauff), books of folk reading in children's literature, Münchhausen, Die Schildbürger, Till Eulenspiegel and other important authors (W. Busch, Erich Kästner) and texts such as Struwwelpeter, Biene Maja including girls' literature (Emmy von Rhode: Trotzkopf). The emphasis is on 20th century literature and authors such as Ottfried Preußler, Michael Ende, Isolde Heyne, Cornelia Funke. The class will work with shorter texts by these authors. The aim of the seminar is to learn how to recognize a quality literary text for children and young people, to be able to select a suitable text for teaching German and to didacticize it appropriately.
